Fauci invokes 5th Amendment right during GOP-led hearing on COVID origins

Dr. Anthony Fauci, a prominent figure in America's COVID response, repeatedly invoked his Fifth Amendment right during a Senate committee hearing on Wednesday. The Republican-led hearing, chaired by Senator Rand Paul, aimed to investigate the origins of COVID-19 and whether Fauci had misled Congress and the public. Fauci labeled Paul's pursuit of him as an "unhinged obsession."

The hearing sought to determine if Fauci had indeed misled Congress and the public about the virus's origins. Paul accused Fauci of a cover-up, pointing to his private writings that suggested the virus originated in a lab in Wuhan, China. However, in public, Fauci had claimed it started with animal-to-human transmission at a live animal market near the lab.

The Kentucky Republican also alleged that Fauci had pushed for lockdowns and close schools, citing notes from Fauci's government computer. Fauci defended his record of cooperation with Congress, stating he had appeared in multiple Senate and House hearings and had answered questions about the same issues under oath.
