Egypt leads Africa's start-up funding revival as Nigeria regains momentum

Egypt emerged as Africa's leading destination for start-up investment in the first half of 2026, recording its strongest performance on record. While Nigeria returned to growth and reclaimed the lead in equity funding, South Africa and Kenya slipped back, highlighting a shifting investment landscape across the continent.

Egyptian healthtech startup Reme-D has recently secured $1.45 million in Pre-Series A funding to bolster its manufacturing capabilities, regional presence, and diagnostic product line. Anara Impact Capital led the investment round, joined by Global Innovation Fund, Africa Health Ventures, and additional investors. Established in 2023 by Salma Tammam, Reme-D focuses on developing and producing affordable, temperature-resistant molecular diagnostic tests for diseases like tuberculosis (TB), HIV, hepatitis, and HPV, which primarily target underserved markets in Africa.

This latest investment round will enable Reme-D to amplify its production tenfold, diversify its diagnostics portfolio to include tests for genetic diseases and cancer, and enhance its market reach across Africa.

Since its inception, Reme-D has developed and commercialized 30 diagnostic products at its Cairo facility, distributing over 550,000 tests across Egypt, Kenya, and Sudan to public and private laboratories, hospitals, and research institutions. The company's products have even been featured in international scientific publications.

Additionally, Reme-D recently equipped a custom-made solar-powered mobile laboratory for the WHO Egypt country office, aiding the Egyptian Ministry of Health's efforts to monitor vector-borne diseases in remote regions.

Reme-D's founder and CEO, Salma Tammam, expressed her team's mission: "Our ultimate goal is to ensure that patients in Africa and the Global South no longer face barriers to receiving life-altering disease diagnoses due to cost or the unavailability of advanced molecular tests in their areas." Co-investor Mohamed Hussain from Anara Impact Capital commended Reme-D's ability to combine scientific expertise with an understanding of the challenges of delivering diagnostics in underserved markets.

He added, "We are excited to support the team as they continue to scale their impact across the MEA region and beyond."
