ECB reveals shortlisted designs for new banknotes and launches public survey

On a recent day, the European Central Bank (ECB) presented its selection of design proposals for the forthcoming euro banknotes and initiated a public survey for feedback from citizens across Europe. The designs are divided into two themes, "European culture" and "Rivers and birds," with accompanying motifs for each theme. ECB President Christine Lagarde emphasized the significance of banknotes as tangible expressions of Europe's shared identity.

The contenders emerged from a continent-wide design contest, where 1,200 applications were received from graphic designers, of whom 25 were chosen to create proposals for one or both themes. An independent jury consisted of 21 experts from various fields, including graphic design, communication, neuroscience, and history, shortlisted ten design proposals.

Now, all Europeans are invited to participate in an online survey on these ten designs until September 21, 2026. Meanwhile, an independent research company will conduct a parallel survey among a representative sample of Eurozone citizens, asking the same questions. The ECB will publish a report once the final design concept is chosen.

Public feedback is a crucial component of the Eurosystem's inclusive approach, ensuring that citizens' views are considered in the decision-making process. The Governing Council is projected to make the final decision on the new banknote design by year-end, taking into account the jury's conclusions, technical assessment, and survey results.

Following the selection, the design will undergo further development and testing before entering production. Euro banknotes from the previous series will retain their value and continue circulating alongside the new series. This will be the first full redesign of euro banknotes since their introduction in 2002. ECB Executive Board member Piero Cipollone highlighted that the redesign aims to maintain the euro's security, efficiency, and relatability in payments, preserving citizens' access to public money and their freedom to choose payment methods.

New banknotes will feature advanced security features for authentication and accessibility, including for visually impaired individuals.
