Seven companies leading the mRNA revolution in biotechnology

Seven biotechnology companies are making waves in the rapidly growing field of mRNA technology. Abogen Biosciences, based in China, is leveraging its mRNA platform to develop synthetic mRNA molecules for use in therapies targeting solid tumors, infectious diseases, and rare diseases. The company's lead candidate, ABO2011, is currently in phase 1/2 trials for solid tumors and shows promise as both a monotherapy and in combination with other treatments.

Arcturus Therapeutics, an American company, is also making significant strides in the mRNA field. The company utilizes two platforms, Lunar and Starr, to create lipid-mediated nucleic acid delivery systems and self-replicating RNA nanoparticle delivery systems. Their lead candidates, LUNAR-OTC and LUNAR-CF, are both in phase 2 trials and aim to treat ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency and cystic fibrosis, respectively.

Arcturus has also developed the self-amplifying mRNA vaccine Kostaive, approved by the European Medicines Agency for COVID-19.

Ethris, a German biotech company, focuses on using non-immunogenic messenger RNA (SNIM mRNA) to develop vaccines and therapies. The company's Stabilized Non-Immunogenic mRNA (SNIM RNA) platform generates stabilized non-immunogenic mRNA, which can overcome the instability of mRNA due to chemical changes in their structures. Ethris' lead candidate, ETH47, is in phase 1 trials for asthma.

Meanwhile, Chinese company Abogen Biosciences recently completed a $700 million Series C financing round, one of the largest private biotech funding rounds in China, to support its COVID-19 vaccine clinic and other mRNA projects. These seven companies represent just a few of the many biotech firms entering the mRNA market, as the technology continues to evolve and show promise for treating a wide range of diseases.
