Suspected cultists shoot another Rivers varsity student dead

A university student at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education in Rivers State, Nigeria, was shot and killed on campus on Wednesday by suspected members of a cult group. This incident occurred 48 hours after a shooting spree between rival cult groups on Monday, which had already caused tension on campus. An unnamed source close to the victim told reporters that the student was taken to a hospital where surgeons were attempting to remove bullet pellets from his body.

However, it has not been confirmed whether the victim was a member of any cult group. The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the earlier clash involving two suspected cult groups, but the spokesperson has not yet provided further details on Wednesday's shooting. The university has suspended all remaining activities for the Students' Union Government Week and has directed students to return to their classrooms on Thursday, August 13, 2026, for normal academic activities.
