NiMet warns of flash floods across 13 states in August

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning of potential flash floods across 13 states in Nigeria between August 11 and 20, 2026. NiMet released the advisory on its X handle on Tuesday, detailing the factors contributing to the forecast, including forecast rainfall intensity, soil moisture, drainage capacity, terrain, and dam characteristics. The advisory serves as an early warning system for proactive preparedness, emergency response planning, and disaster risk reduction measures.

The affected states identified in the advisory include Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Niger, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Adamawa, Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Taraba, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. NiMet warns these regions may experience localized flash flooding, particularly in flood-prone, low-lying urban and riverside communities. Possible impacts from heavy rainfall include traffic congestion, road closures, transport disruptions, temporary interruptions to electricity and telecommunications services, reduced visibility, and damage to critical infrastructure.

NiMet advises residents to adhere to weather forecasts and flood advisories issued by the agency and emergency management bodies. The public is urged to avoid walking or driving through flooded areas and to remain alert, preparing to relocate to safer locations if necessary. Emergency management agencies are advised to bolster surveillance, pre-position response teams, and maintain readiness.

Farmers are encouraged to enhance farm drainage and relocate livestock, machinery, and harvested produce from flood-prone areas. The agency also urges authorities to prioritize vulnerable communities for impact-based monitoring, public sensitisation, and rapid warning dissemination.
