NiMet warns of flash floods across 13 states in August

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning of potential flash flooding across 13 northern states in Nigeria between August 11 and 20, 2026. The forecast is based on factors such as forecasted rainfall intensity, soil moisture levels, drainage capacity, terrain, and dam conditions. NiMet provided an early warning system to aid proactive preparedness, emergency response planning, and disaster risk reduction measures.

The high-risk states include Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Niger, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Adamawa, Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Taraba, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. Residents in these areas are likely to experience localized flash flooding, particularly in low-lying urban and riverine communities. The impacts could include traffic congestion, road closures, transport disruptions, temporary interruptions in electricity and telecommunications services, reduced visibility, and potential harm to farmlands, crops, and livestock.

NiMet warned that flash flooding could damage roads, bridges, drainage systems, and other critical infrastructure, as well as increase the risk of waterborne diseases due to stagnant floodwaters. The agency advised the public to follow weather forecasts and flood advisories from NiMet and relevant emergency management agencies. It emphasized the importance of avoiding walking or driving through flooded roads, bridges, or fast-flowing water, and urged vulnerable residents to remain alert and prepare to move to safer locations if necessary.

NiMet also urged authorities to prioritize vulnerable communities for impact-based monitoring, public sensitization, and rapid dissemination of warnings. Farmers were advised to improve farm drainage and relocate livestock, machinery, and harvested produce away from flood-prone areas. NiMet called for authorities to maintain preparedness even in areas with lower flood probability, as flash flooding can develop rapidly during intense rainfall.
