The accident occurred due to a sudden tyre burst, which caused the driver to lose control. According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the six-tyre Mercedes-Benz truck, carrying various goods, was traveling at high speed when the tyre burst, leading to the fatal incident. An elderly male passenger in the front cabin was thrown out of the vehicle and died from head injuries.
