"account": "A Japanese employee of pharmaceutical company Astellas Pharma is set to be released from a three-year and six-month prison sentence in China in mid-December, according to Japanese media reports. The individual was detained in March 2023 on espionage charges and was indicted in August 2024 before receiving his sentencing in July 2025. Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary of Japan expressed regret over the ruling, but provided no further details about the individual or their affiliation. Major Japanese news outlets, including Kyodo and Yomiuri, cited unnamed sources for the impending release. Astellas Pharma, Japan's Foreign Ministry, and the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo did not respond to Reuters' inquiries about the matter. China's Foreign Ministry also declined to comment on the case. The situation has strained relations between Japan and China, with the latter recently advising its citizens against traveling to Japan due to safety concerns. The Chinese government has also restricted exports of rare earth minerals to Japan, which are crucial for the production of various goods ranging from automobiles to weaponry.",
