"account": "On October 19, 2023, a Kenyan court handed Paul Mackenzie, the leader of the doomsday cult, a life sentence, effectively 200 years in prison, for orchestrating the murder of 191 people, mostly children. Mackenzie, alongside 28 accomplices, were found guilty of instructing followers to starve their children to death in a bid to hasten their passage to heaven. Justice Diana Mochache stated that Mackenzie bore the primary criminal responsibility for the heinous act. The judge emphasized that such atrocities deserved the maximum sentence, sending a strong message that such crimes would be punished severely.\n\nMackenzie, who was an arrested in 2023, was found guilty of homicide and starvation offenses, with the sentences running concurrently but consecutively, resulting in a total of 200 years behind bars. The judge ruled against the death penalty, citing that doing so would deprive the victims of any chance of rehabilitation. The case, which had caused international shock, led to the discovery of over 400 bodies in shallow graves in Shakahola forest, near the Kenyan coast.\n\nThe cult's leader was convicted alongside 28 other individuals, who received sentences ranging from up to 160 years. The court described the killings as \"cold and calculated\", with no remorse shown by the perpetrators or declarations that they would fast to death themselves. The cult's members believed Mackenzie was \"Jesus’s mouthpiece,\" and those who opposed his teachings were brutally killed. Mackenzie's followers were indoctrinated with the belief that burial in the forest was akin to a \"wedding\" to Jesus.\n\nPost-mortem examinations revealed that most victims died from starvation, while others succumbed to suffocation, strangulation, or head injuries. The cult's activities had gone unnoticed due to a lack of oversight of rogue religious activities. President William Ruto set up a commission of inquiry, but it was later deemed unconstitutional. Investigations by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights revealed that local authorities had frequently overlooked the cult's activities.",
