"summary": "Nithya Raman has unseated incumbent Karen Bass to become the next mayor of Los Angeles. According to Le Monde English, Bass called Raman to concede on Thursday, November 5, after results showed Raman with 52% of the vote to Bass's 48% with three-quarters of votes counted. The Guardian US described Raman as an urban planner and outsider with close ties to Hollywood progressives.\n\nThe National UAE reports that Raman is an Indian-born politician who, if victorious, will become the city's first Asian-American mayor. Her campaign received support from several Hollywood figures, including Tina Fey, Mindy Kaling, and Mike Schur. The Indian Express notes that Raman has served as a Los Angeles City Council member since 2020 and previously worked with NGOs in India involving movements against the eviction of slum dwellers.\n\nFollowing the results, Shashi Tharoor welcomed her appointment on X, describing her as \"a daughter of Thiruvananthapuram.\"",
