The remarks could complicate Trump's deliberations about restarting major combat operations against Iran, a step officials say is still being considered. Vance's comments also raise questions about the political fortunes of Pentagon officials, particularly Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who is unpopular in Congress and could face impeachment calls. Vance stated on X, \"The reason we lost is the war.\" He also endorsed an earlier recommendation to end the war as \"sound advice.\" Democrats gained control of both the Senate and House of Representatives on Tuesday, winning in Republican strongholds for the first time in generations. The shift was driven by voter frustration over the Iran war, high living costs, and anger at Trump's leadership. While Vance emphasized the president's acknowledgment of the war's impact on the midterm elections, Trump maintained that the decision was the right one, saying, \"I would have done it again.\"", "summary": "WASHINGTON, Nov 4 (Reuters) - US Vice President JD Vance distanced himself from President Donald Trump's war on Iran on Wednesday, questioning its worth and blaming it entirely for a stinging electoral rebuke by voters that delivered control of Congress to Democrats.", "key_points": [], "editors_take": null, "illustration": null, "coverage": { "outlets": 15, "also_reported_by": [ { "outlet": "Buenos Aires Times", "title": "Democrats win control of US Congress as voters deliver Trump midterm rout", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/11/04/democrats-win-control-of-us-congress-as-voters-deliver-trump-midterm", "published": "2026-11-04T09:53:06.000Z" }, { "outlet": "Le Monde English", "title": "With midterms over, fears of renewed US war with Iran", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/11/04/with-midterms-over-fears-of-renewed-us-war-with-iran", "published": "2026-11-04T14:34:39.000Z" }, { "outlet": "Axios", "title": "Vance says the Iran war cost Republicans the midterms", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/11/04/vance-says-the-iran-war-cost-republicans-the-midterms", "published": "2026-11-04T15:54:44.000Z" }, { "outlet": "Middle East Eye", "title": "Vance blames Iran war for Republican midterm defeat", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/11/04/vance-blames-iran-war-for-republican-midterm-defeat", "published": "2026-11-04T16:06:30.000Z" }, { "outlet": "CBS News", "title": "Vance blames Iran conflict for GOP defeats: \"The reason we lost is the war\"", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/11/04/vance-blames-iran-conflict-for-gop-defeats-the-reason-we-lost-is-the", "published": "2026-11-04T16:41:41.000Z" }, { "outlet": "The Indian Express", "title": "Why Republicans lost US midterm elections 2026: VD Vance says ‘Iran war is the reason’", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/11/04/why-republicans-lost-us-midterm-elections-2026-vd-vance-says-iran-war", "published": "2026-11-04T16:47:16.000Z" }, { "outlet": "CNBC", "title": "Crude oil prices fall below $90 a barrel as Vance blames GOP election defeat on Iran war", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/11/04/crude-oil-prices-fall-below-90-a-barrel-as-vance-blames-gop-election", "published": "2026-11-04T16:53:34.000Z" }, { "outlet": "Business Recorder", "title": "US VP Vance says Iran war is 'the reason we lost' midterms", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/11/04/us-vp-vance-says-iran-war-is-the-reason-we-lost-midterms", "published": "2026-11-04T17:32:05.000Z" }, { "outlet": "Al-Monitor", "title": "Vance repudiates Iran war after US electoral defeat", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/11/04/vance-repudiates-iran-war-after-us-electoral-defeat", "published": "2026-11-04T17:46:52.000Z" }, { "outlet": "Jerusalem Post", "title": "Israel ties, Iran war drove Trump voters to Democrats, Vance says after midterm defeat", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/11/04/israel-ties-iran-war-drove-trump-voters-to-democrats-vance-says-after", "published": "2026-11-04T17:48:52.000Z" }, { "outlet": "Hindustan Times - World News", "title": "Trump may replace Pete Hegseth after GOP midterm losses, Ron DeSantis in race: Report", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/11/04/trump-may-replace-pete-hegseth-after-gop-midterm-losses-ron-desantis", "published": "2026-11-04T17:51:55.000Z" }, { "outlet": "France 24", "title": "Democrats warn Trump camp to ‘lawyer up’ as anger over corruption drives midterms wipeout", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/11/04/democrats-warn-trump-camp-to-lawyer-up-as-anger-over-corruption", "published": "2026-11-04T18:01:05.000Z" }, { "outlet": "Free Malaysia Today", "title": "US VP Vance says Iran war is ‘the reason we lost’ midterms", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/11/04/us-vp-vance-says-iran-war-is-the-reason-we-lost-midterms-18188499", "published": "2026-11-04T21:20:45.000Z" }, { "outlet": "New Straits Times", "title": "US VP Vance says Iran war is 'the reason we lost' midterms", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/11/04/us-vp-vance-says-iran-war-is-the-reason-we-lost-midterms-18205637", "published": "2026-11-04T23:26:19.000Z" } ] }, "ai_generated": true, "disclaimer": "Summaries, key points and the editor’s take are written by software from other outlets’ reporting and may contain errors — always check the linked original." }
