"account": "U.S. Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive physician with roots in Egyptian immigrant heritage, has won the Michigan Senate race, becoming the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate. The contest in Michigan, a key battleground state, was a closely contested race, particularly after incumbent Senator Gary Peters decided to retire at the end of the current term.\n\nEl-Sayed's victory stems from a campaign that highlighted his progressive policies and drew stark contrasts between the Democratic establishment and the left-wing candidates. Despite facing a highly charged and personal campaign, marked by accusations of antisemitism and Islamophobia from Republicans, El-Sayed prevailed and can now represent the nation's largest Muslim population in Congress.",
"summary": "El-Sayed has defeated former Rep. Mike Rogers in Michigan’s open Senate race, making him the first Muslim elected to the United States Senate.",
