"account": "Grant Wood's iconic 1930 painting, American Gothic, featuring a stern rural man and woman in front of a modest white house, has become as recognizable as the Mona Lisa and The Scream. Art historian Wanda Corn, author of The Couple with the Pitchfork: American Gothic from Easel to Icon, discusses the painting's transformation into the \"couple with the pitchfork\" over the past six decades. Corn reveals that the subjects of the painting were Wood's sister Nan and his dentist father Byron McKeeby, not a married couple as commonly perceived. The misconception arose due to the public's inability to interpret the image accurately. Despite the artist's intentions and his own family's clarification, the image's reception has been dismissive and marginalized in art historical texts. The book delves into Wood's life, sexuality, and the impact of the painting on high and popular culture, highlighting its enduring presence in various forms such as political propaganda and modern adaptations like Obama Gothic.",
