"account": "A report commissioned by the Verulam Business Forum has uncovered serious hygiene and safety issues at one of the town's most historic marketplaces. The investigation, conducted by Roshan Lil-Ruthan, chairperson of the forum, revealed poor sanitation, pest control problems, and inadequate security at the Verulam Market.\n\nTraders, farmers, hawkers, and shoppers have complained about the market's conditions, which compromise trader dignity, customer health, food safety, and the sustainability of economic activity. The market, a critical hub for traders, farmers, and families, has shown years of inadequate maintenance and neglect from municipal authorities.\n\nOf particular concern is the lack of proper hygiene and safety measures, including unsanitary toilet facilities, dirty aisles, and a rat infestation. Traders also noted issues with lighting, storm-water drainage, and vehicle security. The forum has called on the eThekwini Municipality to address these issues within 30 days, implementing measures such as emergency cleaning and pest control, as well as creating a Market Management Committee.",
