"summary": "A veteran, Virginia Hicks, has been named the 2026 National Silver Cross Mother by the Royal Canadian Legion after her daughter, Mariebeth Short, died during a military training exercise in 2002. Hicks will place a wreath at the National War Memorial in Ottawa on Remembrance Day, an annual tradition for mothers who have lost a child serving in the Canadian military. Hicks, who served in the Canadian Armed Forces for 29 years, has a family history of military service. The article also mentions that four Canadian soldiers were killed in a training exercise in Alberta last month, and an investigation is underway into the incident.",
