"account": "On Thursday, French investigators questioned presidential hopeful Edouard Philippe, a former prime minister, in a case of alleged embezzlement, according to sources close to the investigation. Philippe, who is currently the mayor of Le Havre, was designated an “assisted witness” by two investigating magistrates. Assistant witness status is less severe than a formal investigation, but still indicates the seriousness of the allegations.\n\nIn response to the status of an assisted witness, Philippe's lawyer, Emmanuel Marsigny, stated that his client welcomes the decision, as it confirms that he has done nothing wrong in the matter.\n\nPhilippe, who served as prime minister from 2017 to 2020, has previously rejected all accusations against him. He is running as a candidate for the centre-right Horizons party in the upcoming presidential election, which is set to take place next year. Currently, Philippe is trailing far-right and far-left rivals in opinion polls.",
