"summary": "Three individuals have been arrested in the Atewa Forest Reserve in Ghana's Eastern Region as part of Operation Green Shield, a military-backed initiative launched by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) to combat illegal mining. The operation, conducted on October 27, 2026, aims to protect Ghana's threatened forest reserves and address the environmental and financial consequences of illegal mining. The Lands Minister, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, described the destruction of forest reserves as a national emergency, warning that illegal mining is putting the country's environment, water resources, and future generations at risk. The government faces significant financial burdens in reclaiming degraded forest reserves, with restoration costs running into billions of dollars.",
