According to the country's official election authority, Lula claimed 51.75 percent of the vote, while Bolsonaro took 48.25 percent after 98.76 percent of ballots were counted. Bolsonaro, the son of the late former president Jair Bolsonaro, emerged victorious in the first round of voting this month before facing Lula in the decisive runoff. This marks a historic first in Brazil's presidential election history, where a candidate who lost in the preliminary round has still managed to secure the presidency. Lula, now 80 years old, positioned the election as a clash over national identity and sovereignty, presenting voters with a choice between someone who kisses the Brazilian flag and another who kisses the American flag, a reference to their respective political stances. Brazil's Constitution permits presidents to serve two consecutive four-year terms, but allows them to return to power after sitting out a term, with no cap on the number of times they can be re-elected. Lula's presidential journey began in 1989, when he lost three elections before finally winning in 2002. He went on to win re-election in 2006 and returned to power in 2022, making this his seventh presidential run.", "summary": "Brazil’s left-wing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been elected to an unprecedented fourth presidential term, narrowly defeating right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in a closely contested election.
