"account": "The players' association head, Bruce Meyer, denounced the owners' proposal of a salary cap as a \"nuclear bomb\" ahead of the 35th World Series opener. The proposal, intended to promote competitive balance, is expected to trigger a work stoppage once the current labor contract expires on December 1, potentially halting spring training and opening day plans. The Milwaukee Brewers, ranked 19th in payroll, and the Tampa Bay Rays, ranked 25th, advanced to the World Series, demonstrating that small-payroll teams can compete despite the owners' claims. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred maintains that small markets have limited success and that the cap is necessary for the sport's growth. Meyer argues that the current system works and that the cap is merely a demand for increased profits and franchise values, not a true solution for competitive balance.",
"summary": "MILWAUKEE (AP) — Baseball's union chief said the owners' proposal of a salary cap this summer was a “nuclear bomb\" and players have no interest in the type of economic system Commissioner Rob Manfred maintains is needed for the sport to thrive.",
