"account": "John Mayer has unveiled his first new solo single in over five years, titled \"Tom and Jerry,\" on October 23, 2023. The midtempo track opens with a shuffling, brushed drum pattern and hypnotic guitar riff, as Mayer admits things are not going well. He sings, \"I'm never gonna catch you/ This is never gonna end/ Might as well be my lover/ If you don’t wanna be my friend.\" The singer then reveals his desire to run away with a lover who only wants him when they already have someone else or when it's all wrong. Mayer wrote, \"Tom and Jerry\" was the name he used when saving his first voice memo with the song idea. The single features contributions from co-writer and co-producer Blake Slatkin, Welsh session bassist Pino Palladino, drummer Aaron Sterling, percussionist Lenny Castro, and pianist Larry Goldings. Mayer's new deal with Mercury Records for his Sob Rock Records imprint gave birth to this track, which is his first solo release since his 2021 Sob Rock album. The singer/guitarist is also gearing up to launch a 21-show residency run at Las Vegas' Sphere starting April 8, 2027.",
"summary": "The singer recruited a murder's row of session greats for the song that is the first in his new deal with Mercury Records.",
