"account": "Tom Skerritt, the Emmy-winning actor known for his commanding presence on screen, passed away on October 21 at the age of 93. Throughout his five-decade-long career, Skerritt was widely regarded as a trustworthy authority figure. In \"Top Gun,\" he played the seasoned flight instructor keeping hotshot pilots in line, while in \"Alien,\" he portrayed the doomed captain of the Nostromo. On television, he starred as Sheriff Jimmy Brock on \"Picket Fences,\" earning two Emmy nominations and winning for outstanding lead actor in a drama series in 1993. Skerritt's versatility extended beyond badges and uniforms, as he played roles such as Shirley MacLaine's patient husband in \"The Turning Point\" and Sally Field's husband in \"Steel Magnolias.\" His dry wit added warmth even to his sternest characters, earning him a reputation for bringing humanity to even the sternest roles. Beyond his acting, Skerritt was passionate about various causes, including veterans' support, the natural world, and helping others find their voices. Among his many films, \"A River Runs Through It\" holds a special place in his heart. In April, he shared a heartfelt Instagram post recalling the film, which was screened during a Q&A event with author John Maclean and others. Skerritt's love for the river was evident, and he saw the film as a project that touched him deeply. Tributes from co-stars highlighted Skerritt's gentle nature and leadership qualities. Julia Roberts, Kathy Baker, and Lauren Holly all praised his kindness, graciousness, and the joy he brought to the set. Skerritt's family described him as a man whose character defined him more than his credits, and who found joy in imagination, storytelling, service to veterans, and the natural world. His final words to his admirers were a gentle reminder to remember him often.",
