"account": "Residents of Johannesburg's eastern suburbs, including Malvern and Bezuidenhout Valley, have endured repeated water supply disruptions since December 2025 due to alleged damage caused by contractors working on sewerage infrastructure. These contractors reportedly cause water-quality issues by damaging drinking-water pipes during sewer repairs, leading to precautionary water shut-offs that can last up to two weeks and cost the city money for emergency repairs, testing, and the use of water tankers. Ward councillor Carlos da Rochas of Bezuidenhout Valley has criticized the lack of supervision of these contractors, claiming that their work is not adequately checked and often results in further damage. Both da Rochas and Malvern councillor Neuren Pietersen have called for better oversight of contractors involved in the city's major pipe replacement program, citing repeated incidents of water contamination and the potential for further disruptions as the city undertakes extensive infrastructure upgrades.",
