"account": "Russian officials freed 74-year-old American Stephen Hubbard, who was imprisoned for alleged involvement in fighting for Ukraine, as President Vladimir Putin met with US envoy Steve Witkoff in St. Petersburg. Hubbard was transported to Pulkovo Airport, according to Putin's statement early Wednesday. President Donald Trump later confirmed Hubbard was \"on his way back home\" and emphasized there was no \"swap\" involved. Witkoff praised Putin as a \"humanitarian,\" sparking criticism from Republican lawmakers. Hubbard, who served a seven-year sentence in a penal colony in 2024, was accused of participating in a defense unit during Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. He was reportedly in poor health and expected to seek medical treatment in Texas. Witkoff's comments received backlash, but Vice President Kamala Harris defended his actions, emphasizing the priority of returning the American hostage to his family. Hubbard's release followed a request from Trump, who claimed he had discussed the matter directly with Putin. The US state department welcomed the release, stating it was a step towards freeing all unjustly detained Americans.",
