"summary": "The Benue State House of Assembly has passed a bill seeking to amend the Nigerian Constitution to permit the establishment of state police. During a Tuesday plenary presided over by Speaker Alfred Emberga, House Majority Leader Peter Ipusu led deliberations, arguing that decentralized policing would improve grassroots intelligence gathering, emergency responses, and law enforcement. Ipusu noted that the measure could help address security threats such as urban crime, farmer-herder conflicts, and rural banditry while promoting accountability and employment.\n\nThe proposed amendment intends to create a constitutional framework for state police services to operate alongside the Federal Police Service, including provisions for funding and operations. Following the approval, Speaker Emberga instructed the Clerk of the House to communicate the decision to the National Assembly for further legislative action.\n\nIn a separate development, the Ekiti Assembly passed a bill to establish state police. According to Premium Times, the bill scaled its second and third readings during plenary with support from all 21 members present.",
