"account": "Forty years after the assassination of journalist Dele Giwa, the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) insists that justice must be served. Giwa, founder of Newswatch magazine, was killed by a parcel bomb on October 19, 1986, and remains the only journalist in Nigeria not convicted of murder. The NGE president, Eze Anaba, and general secretary, Onuoha Ukeh, expressed dismay at the 40-year delay in bringing the killer to justice. They emphasized that Giwa's murder is not just the loss of a man, but a blow to press freedom, public accountability, and the rule of law. The NGE urged authorities to re-examine evidence and pursue a thorough investigation, warning against trial by media. The Guild lauded Giwa's journalism for its intellectual rigor, literary elegance, and unwavering commitment to truth, cautioning that his assassination was an attack on the freedom to question and hold those in power accountable. They stressed the need to protect journalists investigating corruption and abuse of power, and to ensure their protection from intimidation and threats.",
