"summary": "The National Hydrographic Centre (NHC) in Malaysia is seeking legal status through a proposed National Hydrography Act to replace its 54-year-old administrative memorandum. This act would provide the NHC with statutory backing, institutional permanence, and streamline decision-making processes. Currently, the NHC operates under a cabinet memorandum that can be amended or rescinded by the cabinet, leading to administrative hurdles and hindering its agility. The proposed legislation, which has received support from the Defence Ministry, envisions the NHC as a standalone department directly under the defence minister, similar to other specialized departments.",
