Sonu Pal, a 25-year-old resident of Kumortuli, lost his mother in the chaos as she died before his eyes. Pal himself narrowly escaped the deadly crush, recounting the terrifying experience of being trapped under a pile of people. The incident took place in Girish Park police station area around 7:40 pm during a sudden downpour. The local residents described the scene as overcrowded, with people incapable of staying outside in the rain, leading to a desperate rush for entry into the pandal.
