Dr Yadav is the second woman to hold the position of Karnataka Governor, following V.S. Ramadevi who served from 1999 to 2002. Born a Kargil war widow, Dr Yadav entered politics after her husband, Sukhbir Singh Yadav, was killed during the conflict. She represented Mahendragarh in Haryana in the Lok Sabha from 1999 to 2004. An academic with a doctorate in chemistry, Dr Yadav has held various positions within the Bharatiya Janata Party and served on the National Commission for Backward Classes.
