"summary": "MyJoyOnline Ghana reports that Kofi Asare, the Executive Director of Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch), has called for the introduction of standardised safeguarding procedures, a sex offenders' register, and mandatory criminal background checks for teachers in Ghana. This call comes in response to the recent allegations of sexual misconduct against a teacher at the Obuasi Senior High Technical School, which led to the suspension of the headmaster. Asare argues that the current lack of consistent standard operating procedures (SOPs) has resulted in uneven responses to safeguarding concerns within the education system. He emphasizes the need for clearly defined procedures to ensure allegations are handled fairly, protecting both students and the rights of accused staff. Additionally, Asare advocates for the establishment of a sex offenders' register and mandatory background checks for prospective teachers, noting that such measures are already in place in several other jurisdictions.",
