"account": "Four Muslim names—Khan, Ahmed, Ali, and Hussain—have climbed into the top 10 most common surnames for newborns in England and Wales, according to a report analyzing Office for National Statistics (ONS) data from 2025. The rankings, which focus on family names rather than first names, mark a significant shift from 1996, when the top three surnames were Smith, Jones, and Williams. This year, Smith still leads the list, followed by Jones, Williams, and Singh. The increase in Muslim surnames is notable, with Khan and Ahmed each doubling in frequency since 1996, while Singh and Kaur have experienced a fivefold rise. Jones has seen a 43% decline, and Williams has also dropped significantly. The data, which tracks exact spellings and excludes surnames with fewer than three births, does not indicate the religion or nationality of the children registered.",
