"account": "A Chinese delegation, comprising businesspeople, recently visited Etorofu, one of four islands claimed by both Japan and Russia, to explore potential joint projects. The delegation's visit comes as Sakhalin Oblast, a Russian administrative region that includes the disputed islands, announced the feasibility studies. Japan asserts that the islands, known as the Northern Territories in Japan and the Southern Kurils in Russia, were illegally seized by the Soviet Union after World War II. Russia, however, maintains that the seizure was legitimate.\n\nThe Japanese government has expressed concern over foreign investments and visits conducted under Russian regulatory procedures. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated that Japan would respond appropriately to the situation and is working to clarify the facts. Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi also emphasized that Japan will respond in line with its stance on the matter.\n\nSakhalin authorities highlighted the islands' potential for international cooperation, with Governor Valery Limarenko emphasizing the region's tourism and business opportunities. The delegation showed interest in developing hotels, as well as farming sea cucumbers and sea urchins. This development follows Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to the island chain in August 2023, marking his first trip to the area since taking office in 2000. Putin later announced tax incentives to encourage development in the region.\n\nIn January 2024, Deputy Prime Minister Yury Trutnev revealed that Chinese businesses had shown interest in investing in the disputed islands.",
