"account": "Duane Keffe D. Davis, now 63, has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas. Judge Carli Kierny stated that Davis would receive credit for time already served. Initially, Davis pleaded not guilty to murder with a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further or assist a criminal gang. At his sentencing, Davis expressed a desire to have some of his belongings returned, including pictures, and indicated he had no further remarks.\n\nShakur, a hip-hop legend, was fatally shot while stopped at a red light on September 7, 1996. The identity of the shooter remained unknown for years until Davis began publicly discussing his presence in the white Cadillac observed by investigators at the scene. Prosecutors alleged that Davis had sought revenge against Tupac and his associate, Marion Suge Knight, co-founder of Shakur's record company, Death Row Records, after a confrontation involving Davis' nephew and Knight. While Davis' account of the shooting evolved over time, Chief Deputy District Attorney Binu Palal maintained that key aspects remained consistent. Davis' attorney argued that there was insufficient evidence linking him to Las Vegas on the night of the shooting, citing the lack of surveillance footage, phone logs, or other tangible records. The prosecution contended that four individuals were present in the Cadillac, and Davis was the sole survivor by the time of his 2023 arrest and conviction. Davis recounted his role in the shooting, as well as the wounding of Knight, in his 2019 memoir, \"Compton Street Legend.\" Despite his attorney's attempts to exclude the memoir as evidence, the prosecution refused, arguing its relevance.",
