"account": "German Labour Minister Bärbel Bas resigned from her cabinet position and her role as Social Democratic Party co-chair on October 12, 2026, due to grief following the loss of her stepdaughter and internal political conflicts within the ruling coalition. Her sudden departure added to the strain on Chancellor Friedrich Merz's coalition government, which was already facing mounting disagreements over policy proposals. Bas made her decision to step down after realizing she needed time to process her grief, but political infighting hastened her decision as she felt unable to continue her duties effectively. SPD co-chair Lars Klingbeil defended Bas, calling political attacks during her period of mourning \"inappropriate\" and \"unacceptable.\" Chancellor Merz offered a conciliatory message, respecting Bas's decision. The resignation created further instability in the coalition, as both the SPD and the conservative CDU/CSU bloc faced falling support in opinion polls due to poor performance in recent regional elections. The leadership shift threatened to stall important legislative battles on pension reforms and flexible work hours, risking delays in crucial updates to Germany's social security and welfare system.",
