The vessel, carrying 350 people, sank near Obock port town on Thursday night, leaving dozens still missing. Around 80 survivors were rescued by authorities. IOM's Djibouti mission chief, Alexandre Coissac, described the tragedy as a \"stark reminder\" of the risks migrants face while seeking a better life elsewhere. Bodies of 52 men, 42 women, nine girls, and six boys were recovered. Coissac expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and conveyed his thoughts to both survivors and families of those lost. Local authorities are organizing burials for the deceased, while survivors, all Ethiopian nationals, are receiving medical care. Despite ongoing civil war in Yemen and instability in the region, migrants continue to risk their lives crossing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait to reach the country, driven by poverty, insecurity, and climate change impacts. Since September, IOM's Displacement Tracking Matrix has documented over 20,000 movements from Ethiopia to Djibouti. The agency is providing aid to 64 survivors at its Obock response center, including healthcare and family contact support. IOM is collaborating closely with local authorities to prevent further tragedies at sea and on land. Since 2025, more than 900 migrants have died or gone missing on this route, with a 18% increase in attempts. In March 2026, nine people died and 45 were missing in a similar incident.", "summary": "At least 109 migrants, including 15 children have died and dozens more are still missing after a boat sank off the coast of Djibouti, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has said.", "key_points": [ "At least 109 migrants, including 15 children, died when a boat capsized off Djibouti.", "Vessel carrying 350 people sank near Obock port town on Thursday night.", "80 survivors rescued, tragedy highlights migrants' perilous journey." ], "editors_take": null, "illustration": null, "coverage": { "outlets": 12, "also_reported_by": [ { "outlet": "France 24", "title": "🔴At least 109 migrants dead, more than 100 missing after boat capsizes off Djibouti", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/10/11/at-least-109-migrants-dead-more-than-100-missing-after-boat-capsizes", "published": "2026-10-11T09:43:01.000Z" }, { "outlet": "Le Monde English", "title": "109 migrants dead, 116 missing after boat capsizes off Djibouti, UN says", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/10/11/109-migrants-dead-116-missing-after-boat-capsizes-off-djibouti-un-says", "published": "2026-10-11T09:48:02.000Z" }, { "outlet": "Sky News", "title": "109 dead after ship sinks off coast of Djibouti, UN agency says", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/10/11/109-dead-after-ship-sinks-off-coast-of-djibouti-un-agency-says", "published": "2026-10-11T10:08:00.000Z" }, { "outlet": "People Daily Kenya", "title": "109 dead, including 15 children in Djibouti boat accident", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/10/11/109-dead-including-15-children-in-djibouti-boat-accident", "published": "2026-10-11T10:37:01.000Z" }, { "outlet": "RTE News", "title": "109 migrants dead in boat wreck off Djibouti, says UN", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/10/11/109-migrants-dead-in-boat-wreck-off-djibouti-says-un", "published": "2026-10-11T10:54:37.000Z" }, { "outlet": "CityNews", "title": "109 migrants, including 15 children, die after boat capsizes off Djibouti", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/10/11/109-migrants-including-15-children-die-after-boat-capsizes-off", "published": "2026-10-11T11:07:58.000Z" }, { "outlet": "Winnipeg Free Press", "title": "109 migrants, including 15 children, die after boat capsizes off Djibouti", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/10/11/109-migrants-including-15-children-die-after-boat-capsizes-off-13705240", "published": "2026-10-11T11:09:27.000Z" }, { "outlet": "Hindustan Times - World News", "title": "At least 109 migrants, including 15 children, killed after boat capsizes off Djibouti", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/10/11/at-least-109-migrants-including-15-children-killed-after-boat", "published": "2026-10-11T11:19:56.000Z" }, { "outlet": "DW English (Top Stories)", "title": "A migrant boat sank off the coast of Djibouti with the UN reporting over 200 people dead or missing", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/10/11/a-migrant-boat-sank-off-the-coast-of-djibouti-with-the-un-reporting", "published": "2026-10-11T11:35:00.000Z" }, { "outlet": "BBC World", "title": "Children among 109 dead after boat capsizes off Djibouti, UN says", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/10/11/children-among-109-dead-after-boat-capsizes-off-djibouti-un-says", "published": "2026-10-11T12:08:20.000Z" }, { "outlet": "Khaosod English", "title": "109 migrants, including 15 children, die after boat capsizes off Djibouti", "url": "https://urgent.news/2026/10/11/109-migrants-including-15-children-die-after-boat-capsizes-off-13713171", "published": "2026-10-11T12:33:46.000Z" } ] }, "ai_generated": true, "disclaimer": "Summaries, key points and the editor’s take are written by software from other outlets’ reporting and may contain errors — always check the linked original." }
