"account": "The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) will not penalize Filipino tennis star Alex Eala for choosing to compete in the 2026 Asian Games over the mandatory China Open, according to Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA) Executive Director Tonnette Mendoza. Eala will be featured on Maria Sharapova's podcast \"Pretty Tough,\" set to release on October 7. At a recent Senate Committee on Sports hearing, Mendoza clarified that PHILTA had reached out to the WTA seeking clarification on the rules and requesting a waiver of potential sanctions after Eala independently decided to represent the Philippines at an Olympic-qualifying event. The WTA has not yet responded to the inquiry. Mendoza explained that the WTA's penalties for missing mandatory tournaments are typically for players who opt out for exhibition matches, not for prioritizing national team commitments. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) expressed support for athletes choosing national representation over mandatory professional events, according to a previous meeting. Eala secured a bronze medal at the 2026 Asian Games, marking her second consecutive podium finish in the continental competition.",
