Her Tamil-heritage family, with eight children, prioritized education despite limited financial resources. Her father worked multiple jobs while her mother raised the children. Despite apartheid restrictions, Pillay's parents believed in educating all their children, regardless of gender.\n\nPillay's academic journey began at the University of Natal, where she earned both a bachelor's and a law degree in the early 1960s. Amidst the backdrop of apartheid, she actively participated in protests and boycotts against racial injustice, signaling her commitment to challenging inequality. After completing her studies, Pillay embarked on a successful law career, becoming the first woman of colour to establish a law practice in Natal Province in 1967. Her experiences with apartheid influenced her advocacy, as she worked to defend anti-apartheid activists and expose allegations of torture in detention.\n\nFurthering her expertise, Pillay pursued advanced legal studies in the United States, earning a Master of Laws degree from Harvard University in 1982, focusing on areas central to her professional work. She then completed a Doctor of Juridical Science degree from Harvard Law School in 1988, making her the first South African to receive a doctorate in law from the institution. These academic achievements equipped her to challenge human rights violations on a global scale.\n\nPillay's contributions to human rights include establishing important legal precedents on sexual violence and genocide, advancing global human rights protection, and promoting women's rights and justice for victims. Her education and determination exemplify how academic opportunities and perseverance can overcome entrenched systems of discrimination.", "summary": "Indian-Origin South African human rights lawyer Navanethem ‘Navi’ Pillay , who was awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on October 9, 2026, has spent decades advocating for justice, equality and international law.
