"account": "South African jurist Navanethem \"Navi\" Pillay has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her dedication to promoting peace and international law. The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced her win on Friday, October 9, 2026, highlighting her courageous and principled efforts to ensure the prosecution of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. Born in Durban, South Africa, under apartheid, Pillay became a trailblazing lawyer who fought against structural discrimination and segregation. Her career has included representing Nelson Mandela and others opposing apartheid, serving on international courts and tribunals, and leading the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory. The committee praised Pillay's commitment to universal legal principles, her independence, and her steadfastness in advancing a more comprehensive global legal order.",
