"account": "On Friday, the Nobel Peace Prize for 2026 was conferred upon Navanethem Pillay for her unwavering dedication to promoting peace and upholding international law. The Nobel Institute hailed Pillay as a person of exceptional courage and integrity, who has helped establish a more comprehensive global legal system. The committee recognized Pillay's instrumental role in ensuring the prosecution of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. Born in Durban, South Africa, under apartheid, Pillay emerged as a legal pioneer, fighting against systemic discrimination and exclusion. Her career has encompassed roles as a judge in the High Court of South Africa, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, and the International Criminal Court. She also served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Palestinian territories. Currently, Pillay serves as a judge on the International Court of Justice in a case accusing Myanmar of genocide. The Nobel Institute emphasized that Pillay's commitment to universal legal principles and her moral compass are constants throughout her long career. She has demonstrated that legal measures can prevent acts of war and violence. The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the prize to highlight the importance of the rule of law in maintaining peace and resolving conflicts non-violently. The judges, who safeguard the delicate balance between order and chaos, are lauded for their courage, vision, and determination.",
