"summary": "Russia has requested the extradition of senior International Criminal Court (ICC) figures, including its President Tomoko Akane, a Japanese national. The Russian Prosecutor General's Office sent requests to the Netherlands and other countries for the handover of nine senior ICC figures convicted by a Russian court in absentia.\n\nThe Japanese government has strongly protested this move, calling it \"unjustified and unacceptable\". Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Masanao Ozaki stated that Japan will respond appropriately, including making further representations to Russia and maintaining communication with the ICC and other states parties.\n\nThe extradition request comes amid pressure on the ICC from countries including the United States, which sanctioned senior ICC leadership, including Akane, in August. According to The Mainichi, a Russian court sentenced Akane and other ICC members to prison terms in 2025, following the ICC's 2023 arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin on allegations of war crimes in Ukraine.",
