"account": "Thai authorities have initiated extradition proceedings against Chinese journalist Bai Zhaodong, who exposed government corruption in China for two decades before fleeing in 2023 to avoid persecution, according to Reporters Without Borders. The 56-year-old, recognized by the UN as a refugee, arrived in Thailand in 2024 and has been detained since January 2026. Chinese officials accuse him of extortion and bribery, and an extradition request has been submitted. Thai prosecutor Prayuth Pecharakun informed AFP that the extradition hearing process could take several months. Bai's lawyer confirmed he was taken to court for extradition proceedings, though the hearing was not previously announced. The development, happening the day before a potential decision on the legality of his detention, has been called \"scandalous\" by Reporters Without Borders, citing concerns over his safety if returned to China.",
