"account": "In September 2021, the United States began direct talks with Myanmar's military government, a significant shift from years of isolation. Assistant Secretary of State for Intelligence and Research, Michael Vance, played a leading role in these negotiations, which aimed to secure the release of American businessman Adam Castillo and explore broader cooperation. Castillo had been detained in Myanmar since June 2021 on trumped-up charges, and both the US government and White House reportedly engaged in back-channel negotiations to secure his release. The talks also focused on Myanmar's rare-earth mineral deposits, which are of interest to the US due to potential supply chain diversification, though challenges remain due to militia control and Chinese dominance as a major importer. The State Department emphasized its engagement with all groups in Myanmar to address violence and release political prisoners, while the military-backed government has not commented on the meetings.",
