"account": "The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) FCT Council has declared an indefinite strike over unresolved teacher promotion and welfare issues in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The strike began on October 7, 2026, following a decision made at a State Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday at Labour House, Abuja. The NLC demanded the removal of the vacancy precondition for the promotion of FCT teachers, the reconsideration of eligible 2025 teachers for their promotion examinations, and the withdrawal of redeployment and demotion letters issued to directors under the Harmonised Teachers Retirement Age Act 2022. The FCT Administration's response to the union's ultimatum was deemed vague and did not address the core issues. The NLC maintains that teachers should not be subjected to the vacancy-based promotion system meant for pool officers, as they are specifically employed to teach and should only be promoted when due. The FCT Administration's attempt to sustain industrial harmony without addressing the injustice against teachers was described as \"mere wishful thinking.\" The NLC has directed all FCT workers to stay away from their duty posts until their demands are addressed, appealing to residents and civil society to support the union's cause and urge the FCT Administration to resolve the issues before the education sector collapses. As of press time, the FCT Administration had not yet publicly reacted to the strike declaration.",
