"account": "Former German foreign intelligence chief August Hanning was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of espionage and attempted treason, prosecutors announced. Hanning, who led the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) from 1998 to 2005, is accused of passing state secrets to a foreign intelligence service, including treasonous espionage, spying for state secrets, attempted treason, and espionage. He is also suspected of involvement in a prominent child abduction case that occurred in 2024. Hanning's former aide, Manfred D., was also arrested and charged with aiding and abetting attempted treason and treasonous espionage. Both men are believed to have received classified information from Manfred D., who served as Hanning's chief of staff and later as chief of staff for several subsequent BND presidents. The men were arrested in southern Germany, with evidence found in their premises. The investigation into Hanning's activities stems from a search of his residence related to the child abduction case.",
