"account": "Former German foreign intelligence agency chief August Hanning appeared in a federal court in Karlsruhe on Wednesday to face espionage and treason charges. Hanning, who served as BND director from 1998 to 2005, was ordered to remain in detention until his trial. His former chief of staff, Manfred D., was also arrested and is accused of stealing secret documents and selling them to an unnamed foreign intelligence agency. The two are believed to have stolen and potentially passed on over 2,000 secret documents between 2010 and 2023. The extent of the stolen information and the identities of those who received it remain unclear. Hanning's tenure at the BND sparked concerns about the integrity of Germany's intelligence agencies and prompted politicians to call for stricter measures to prevent former security officials from abusing their experience upon transitioning to the private sector.",
