"account": "Floods and heavy storms have disrupted life on the Greek holiday island of Crete, local officials reported on Saturday. The intense weather caused some residents to be trapped in their vehicles, while others had to be evacuated, according to the mayor of the Cretan port of Ierapetra, Manolis Frangoulis. Torrential rain and strong winds damaged infrastructure, with cars and trees being washed into the sea.\n\nThe town of Ierapetra, located on the southeast coast of Crete, received 42 cm of rain between Friday and Saturday, while wind speeds reached up to eight and nine on the Beaufort Scale. As a precaution, a woman was taken to the hospital, and emergency services were deployed to clear small landslides and remove debris from local roads.\n\nIn the town of Sitia, 23 people were stranded in their cars due to flooding, while tourists and their driver abandoned a vehicle that was swept away by floodwaters. At the port of Canea, a popular tourist destination, seafront restaurants and tourist venues suffered damage from giant waves.\n\nThe civil protection agency urged residents in several towns to limit their movements, and the deputy governor of the Heraklion region, Nikos Syrigonakis, stated that emergency services were working to restore transport and monitor water levels in streams and rivers.",
