"summary": "The Ogun State Government has initiated a tree planting drive to curb deforestation and protect biodiversity, planting approximately five million trees across the state and restoring nine forest reserves. The effort, led by the Commissioner for Forestry, Taiwo Oludotun, aims to promote sustainable management of timber resources and involves timber merchants, plank sellers, and woodworkers in supporting tree planting and responsible harvesting. Oludotun emphasized the importance of balancing the economic benefits of the timber industry with the need to conserve forests, which provide livelihoods, protect biodiversity, help regulate the climate, and reduce soil erosion. The Food and Agriculture Organisation’s Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025 reported a decrease in global deforestation rates, but environmental conservation efforts continue to emphasize sustainable management of existing forests, enforcement of regulations, and community and business involvement.",
