"account": "NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — At least 13 people died in a multi-vehicle crash on a highway leading to the coastal city of Mombasa, according to police reports. Most of the victims were pilgrims en route to a prayer site.\n\nThe incident occurred in the Salama area during the early hours of the morning when a truck driver attempted to overtake another truck. The maneuver led to a collision with several vehicles, including a van carrying pilgrims, as reported by local police.\n\nDriver and 12 passengers in the van perished at the scene. The pilgrims were heading to a prayer site in Nakuru County, a region west of Kenya's capital, Nairobi, according to Martin Kivuva, the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Mombasa. The number of pilgrims on board the van and the presence of any survivors remain unclear.\n\nRoad accidents are a persistent issue across Africa, often attributed to poorly maintained vehicles, reckless driving, and subpar road conditions.",
