The 41-year-old Ovechkin, who opened his 22nd NHL season with an assist, played a pivotal role, setting up Tuch's opening goal during the Capitals' dominant first period. Cole Hutson, Jakob Chychrun, and Ryan Leonard added two more goals for the Capitals, while Logan Thompson made an impressive 31 saves. Carolina's Sebastian Aho and Logan Stankoven scored the Hurricanes' goals, and Brandon Bussi stopped 22 shots in net for them.
