"account": "Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mateer has been under scrutiny this season due to his performance on the field. Despite starting the year with high hopes of overcoming his previous struggles, Mateer has struggled to silence the criticism. He has thrown for 883 yards, eight touchdowns, and four interceptions, with a career-high completion rate of 66.1%. However, it is the turnovers and the timing of them that have led to the most criticism. Mateer's first interception of the season came after leading a comeback against the Michigan Wolverines, setting the Wolverines up for a touchdown. He then threw two interceptions against the New Mexico Lobos, but they did not ultimately cost the Sooners the game. The worst game for Mateer was against the Georgia Bulldogs, where he turned the ball over three straight times in the second quarter, leading to a 14-0 deficit. Despite these struggles, head coach Brent Venables remains fully confident in Mateer, calling him \"as tough as they come.\" Venables highlights Mateer's daily work ethic, competitiveness, leadership, and response skills as qualities that give him reason to believe in the quarterback. Venables believes that with better ball security, Mateer has an opportunity to turn around his performance and become one of the positive storylines for the Sooners in the second half of the season.",
